Founded in 1700, Kobataen Co., Ltd. is a heritage tea producer from Ujitawara, Kyoto – the birthplace of Japanese green tea and the site where the legendary Aosei Sencha (Uji-style sencha) was developed. The name Kobataen evolved from the original field called “Kobata,” reflecting its deep ties to the region’s tea cultivation history. The company began wholesale operations in 1870 and mail-order sales in the Taisho era (1920s), establishing a trusted brand that was formally incorporated in 1962.
For over 250 years, Kobataen has sustained its reputation through traditional craftsmanship and rigorous tea appraisal techniques. We have perfected the art of crafting premium matcha, gyokuro, sencha, hojicha, and other specialty teas using traditional methods passed down through generations of tea masters. Qualified tea assessors and instructors, and its teas have garnered multiple prestigious awards—including the Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Award and Kyoto Governor's Award (Uji Tea Fair, 2007), the Grand Gold Award at the 1st World Green Tea Contest (2007), and numerous accolades at global competitions such as the International Institute of Tea Science and Culture and the International Premium Tea Contest for its Matcha (2016) and other teas. Our dedication to excellence has earned us multiple national and international awards, while halal certification from the Japan Islamic Trust ensures compliance with global halal standards. We supply to importers, wholesalers, distributors, and OEM clients across Southeast Asia, supporting private label programs and large-scale distribution.
Kobataen continues to cultivate flavorful, nutrient-rich tea leaves using time-honored methods. With its legacy spanning centuries and a steadfast commitment to quality, Kobataen remains dedicated to delivering authentic, premium Japanese teas from field to international table.
