Wall Stone & Broken Payer Works

The base stones, big and heavy, are laid in a shallow trench, and then off you go, building up layer by layer (course by course, a waller would say), each new stone bridging the joint between the two beneath it, like a brick wall. Most are pinned from behind with a smaller stone, so they sit solid.
